Schools as a Driving Force for Climate Neutrality in Municipalities

On March 21, 2025, the national seminar “Schools in the Municipality as Leaders on the Path to Climate Neutrality” was held at Hotel Forum in Sofia. The event was organized by the National Trust EcoFund (NTEF) as part of the “Vision 2045” Project, funded by the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany. The seminar brought together teachers, school principals, staff, and sustainability experts to discuss the key role of educational institutions in driving climate neutrality at the local level.

A central role in the event was played by representatives of the four pilot schools—Secondary School “P.R. Slaveykov” and Secondary School “Dimitar Talev” from Dobrich, as well as Primary School “Lyuben Karavelov” and Language High School “Vasil Karagyozov” from Yambol—who shared their experiences and insights from their participation in the project.

Schools as a Catalyst for Change

The main message of the event was clear—schools are not just places of education, but can be active leaders in municipalities’ efforts to achieve climate neutrality. By integrating sustainable practices into their daily activities and engaging students, teachers, parents, businesses, and local authorities, educational institutions can set an example and drive change within their communities.

Key Discussion Highlights:

  • How schools can reduce their carbon footprint – shared experiences from pilot schools in Dobrich and Yambol
  • Collaboration between schools and municipalities – how local governments can support environmental initiatives
  • Education as a key tool for shaping sustainable habits and mindsets
  • Pilot initiatives and best practices – examples of sustainable solutions implemented in the educational environment

The Future of Sustainable Schools

The seminar concluded with inspiring discussions on how the model of climate-neutral schools can be expanded and applied throughout the country. Participants united around the idea that schools are natural catalysts of change—through education, personal example, and active engagement in activities aimed at reducing the carbon footprint.

The project’s results demonstrate that climate neutrality is not just a global goal—it starts at the local level, in schoolyards, classrooms, and the communities around them. When schools take the lead, they inspire students and their families to change their habits, ultimately shaping the future of their entire municipality.

This seminar proved that change is already underway—and it starts with schools!
